One of the biggest problems that we encounter is finding consistent quality bassoon reeds for our students. You need to know that you will get a reed that is going to give you a consistent sound each and every time.
How My Reeds Are Different Than Store Bought?
My reeds are different than store bought for a number of reasons, the biggest, I never use subcontractors to make my reeds. Every stage of making your reeds is done by me using quality Donati cane from the Var region of France. Every step from the forming to the final testing of the reeds to the sterilization process and packaging is done by me. I take pride in my work. They have my name on them and I want them to represent what I would hope I would sound like if I were sitting in your group.
Better Control
I channel set the wires on each reed. This ensures there is no chance of them slipping out of position and allows for better control of the reed. The bark is lightly scuffed under the turban so the high quality colorfast cotton thread catches into the bark. The turban is then covered with a clear adhesive so it will never just fall off when taking your reed off of your instrument.
Sound
From the first crow you will notice a difference. Store bought reeds give a one tone crow. You will hear a multiphonic crow from my reeds indicating they are ready for multiple octaves.
Strength
I don’t grade my reeds by soft, medium and hard. All that tells you is the thickness of the blade. I grade my reeds by Resistant and Non-Restistant. What this means is that a non-resistant reed will speak easily with a warm sound. A resistant reed will take more air, but are more useful for extreme ranges. Non-resistant would be better for younger players, but many experienced professionals enjoy non-resistant setups. Any reed resistance can be altered slightly with pliers. All students will need pliers for reed adjustments on any bassoon reed made by any reed maker.
School Orders
Special school pricing is available for reed purchases of quantities 3+. Additional discounts are available for quantities 10+.
Custom Turban Colors
Some schools have found it useful to have a monthly “theme” to make sure that their students are changing out reeds. I am happy to make custom color themes for orders of 5+ reeds at no charge. Please make a notation on your order.
School or wholesale accounts may contact me at donna@learntworeed.com.
COVID-19 - My reeds have always been sterilized in 70% isopropyl alcohol before packaging, which is within current CDC guidelines. I am currently doing a 2 step sterilization.
